Ariadne

The figure of Ariadne relates, in my view, to the magical quality of the feminine. Even though the original story does not hold this kind of symbolism, to me it represents the distant, mesmerizing and irresistable attraction feminine creatures exert. Its thread,  a simple solution to save the masculine character, is a discreet spell that leads to life; I see it as extended from her own hair or as a kind of prolongued ombilical chord that will be the guide through the dark, entangled path of the labyrinth.  The thread, as an instrument, brings her symbolically closer to Arachnae – the builder of labyrinths who produces its own thread, who is the minotaurus and the architect at the same time.   The association between hair and the thread suggests a relationship between Ariadne, as a woman and  the water, the land of entanglements, where hair becomes like a plant - it can easily be a trap or a hiding place; the water – where a thread can seem to promise life, but instead it proves to be lethal. For me, Ariadne is completely dissociated from the part of the story where she is abandoned, she only lives to be a sort of magical creature that brings the solution in an almost unperceivable manner, out of discression and love.
